Most people use poppy seeds in kheer or vegetable gravies. However, poppy seed halwa is prepared in very few households. During winter, halwa holds a special place in the kitchen. Carrot halwa or moong dal halwa are common, but poppy seed halwa is different. It has a rich taste and also provides strength to the body.

Why Is Poppy Seed Beneficial In Winter?

Poppy seeds contain healthy fats that help provide energy to the body. They protect the skin from dryness during cold weather. Poppy seeds are rich in protein and fiber, which support digestion. They also contain calcium, which is good for bones. Iron and magnesium are present as well. Because of these nutrients, poppy seeds are considered an ideal winter food.

What Ingredients Are Needed For Poppy Seed Halwa?

To make the halwa, around 100 grams of poppy seeds are required. The same quantity of sugar should be taken. About 70 grams of desi ghee is needed. One cup of milk is used. Four to five cardamoms are required. Almonds, cashews, and pistachios can be added as dry fruits. All these ingredients are easily available.

What Preparation Is Needed Before Cooking?

First, clean the poppy seeds properly. Wash them once with water. Then soak them for at least four to five hours. This makes the poppy seeds soft. Grinding becomes easier, and the halwa turns smooth in texture.

How Is Poppy Seed Halwa Prepared?

First, chop the dry fruits and roast them lightly in ghee. Grind the cardamom seeds. Blend the soaked poppy seeds in a mixer. Milk can be added if required. Heat ghee in a pan and roast the ground poppy seeds. Cook until a pleasant aroma appears. Then add milk and sugar.

When Is The Halwa Considered Ready?

When the raw taste of poppy seeds disappears and the mixture becomes thick, the halwa is nearly ready. Once it starts leaving ghee from the sides, add cardamom powder. Mix in the roasted dry fruits. The halwa is now ready to serve. Serve it hot.

How Can This Halwa Be Stored?

Poppy seed halwa can be stored in the refrigerator. It remains fresh for four to five days. The taste stays intact even after cooling. Heat it before serving. It becomes a perfect winter dessert. The entire family enjoys it. It offers both health and taste.
